It’s been A WHOLE YEAR since my last favourites post, partly because I was uninspired to write anything, and partly because I just didn’t have many new faves to report. That’s right folks! Gone are the days of spending all my $$ and ££ on beauty products – sort of. 2017 seemed to be a year of reigning it in and spending money on old faves and things I genuinely felt would add to my makeup collection. I did a lot of clearing out, like, A LOT, so my collection is probably the smallest it’s been in four years, but I’m really happy with everything I’ve kept (and the sooner I finish a few things, the sooner I can place an order on Glossier).
This was also the year I had a sort of makeup uniform. My general look was dewy skin, orangey/warm eye with a flick, lashings of mascara and usually a bold lip. My skincare also had a bit of a uniform routine down and after looking at last year’s faves, not much has changed there. I’ve done my skincare roundup first, followed by makeup:

I’ll do one of three things when I wake up: 1. Wash face with the nearest cleanser, 2. Put Simple Micellar Water on a cotton pad and wipe my face, or 3. Go straight in with my SPF. I’ve been a fan of forgoing the cleanser lately because I just like keeping all the lotions and potions from the night before in. I do always use an SPF and this year, I used the Target Up & Up Morning Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30, which I love for a budget alternative that doesn’t irritate my skin and sits well under makeup. I also really enjoyed the Murad Invisblur Porefecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30.
I was much more disciplined at night, using the time as a treat to myself at the end of every day. I started with a cleanse using my trusty Boscia Detoxifying Black Charcoal Cleanser for the majority of the year, but I really fell in love with the Eve Lom Cleansing Balm and I’m mad at myself because it is PRICEY. Luckily, I had a free travel size that C gave me, so I was spared that initial damage. The travel size lasted me about three months, which I think is really good and worth the price. It removes the majority of my makeup and feels so luxurious on my skin.
I always did a double cleanse (sometimes a triple cleanse if I wasn’t using the Eve Lom) with the Simple Micellar Cleansing Water soaked into a few cotton rounds (am going to try some reusable versions of cotton rounds bc I go through these like water). Once I’m certain my face is nice and clean, I go in with the Pixi Glow Tonic. I bought the large bottle at the beginning of the year and I’m not even halfway through because I pour it straight into my hand and pat it in rather than using another cotton round and wasting product. Next, I go in with serums and oils. The majority of the year I used Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil every other night. I then followed that up with the Tarte Maracuja Oil. I then used an eye cream, but there wasn’t a standout product this year and I’m STILL on the hunt for the perfect one. Finally, I topped everything off with another golden oldie, the NUXE Reve de Miel Lip Balm. This saved my life on Accutane and I’m probably on my 8th tub, which is astonishing as each one lasts 6-8 months.

I was super boring this past year and stuck with what I knew and loved, switching my foundation up only every so often. My top base product was once again, the Bourjois 123 Perfect CC Cream. I’ve purchased two of these a year since I first got my hands on it because it’s glowy and gives me the skin-like finish I love. I didn’t have a real favourite concealer this year. It was actually so bad that I was using four at once and still didn’t have the results I wanted.
I finally got rid of a lot of cheek products I just wasn’t using and found that I had some really good, reliable products in my collection. My fave contour is hands down the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Contour Powder in Light. I was always terrified of spending money on the medium shade, so when the light came out, I ordered it off Sephora and used it nearly every day last year. It’s just the perfect shade for sculpting cheekbones and it never looks muddy or too much with the natural looks I prefer. The Benefit Benetint came back into my life in a big way and all these years later, I still love how natural and subtle it is. The Glossier Haloscope in Moonstone changed my life and exceeded all my wildest dreams. Moonstone is this perfect, natural SHEEN that gives you that fresh and healthy glow that just SCREAMS YOUTH. It’s so dewy and so beautiful I can’t recommend it enough.
Before I get into the eye shadows I sported all year, they wouldn’t look half as good without the NARS Pro Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base. Seriously, my life has been forever changed with this product that DOES NOT BUDGE and makes the dreaded disappearing eyeliner a thing of the past. Okay, now that we’ve covered that very important step, I must say my eyes were warm and had some matte rusted/orange shades on them 98% of the year. I REALLY loved using the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette the first half of the year, BUT THEN, Urban Decay dropped the Naked Heat Palette and my world was forever changed. I exclusively used this palette for months and I still can’t get enough. It just gives off a really soft grunge vibe and I’m all about it. On days when I’m feeling wild, I will use the shimmery shades, which are GORGE, but I do prefer mattes for my daily do.
Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner in Trooper is still my fave because of the paintbrush applicator and inky black color. While I haven’t really found a bad mascara, the one that really impressed me this year was Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Extravagent Mascara. It has a really cool brush and does a great job of plumping the lashes.
As always, I can’t choose just one lip product, so here are the ones I kept in my bag at all times. First, a special shoutout to my faves from last year, the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks in Out Loud and Driver’s Seat. These, along with the Sephora Cream Lip Stains are the PERFECT liquid lipstick formulas that LAST FOREVER and look great ALL DAY. But let’s get back to the Smashbox liquid lips – their applicator is precise, the formula is comfortable and the two shades I chose are perfect everyday shades with a bit of oomf. I also really fell for NARS’s Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Famous Red, a sweet, cherry red shade that is bold and punchy in all the right ways and I think it would look good on everyone.
What were your 2017 staples?? Let me know!
